On Friday, November 6th, 2024, Justin and I were given the incredible privilege of joining Kevin Sinfield CBE and his team for the final mile of the Leicester leg of his challenge. The day was already filled with significance, as it came during Kev’s fifth annual challenge, which had been deeply inspired by the memory of our Patron, Rob Burrow CBE.
The devastating loss of Rob on June 2nd, 2024, only deepened the emotional connection we all felt to this year’s challenge. Rob’s fight against Motor Neurone Disease (MND) has touched so many lives, and his legacy continues to fuel the work that Kev and his team are doing to raise awareness and support the MND community.
A Powerful Tribute to Rob Burrow
This year’s challenge was particularly poignant, as it served as a heartfelt tribute to Rob’s bravery and his relentless fight against MND. Kevin Sinfield and his team set out to raise awareness and funds for the MND community through their ‘Run Home for Christmas’ initiative, all while keeping Rob’s memory alive. The mission was more than just about completing the run—it was about honoring Rob and continuing the fight against a disease that affects so many.
In addition to the emotional weight of the event, Kev and his team’s efforts have been nothing short of remarkable. They successfully completed the challenge and raised an astonishing £1.1 million for the MND community. That’s the kind of impact that comes from a united team, and it’s a testament to the power of community, dedication, and love.
The Privilege of Joining Kev and the Team
When Justin and I were invited to join Kev and his team for the final stretch in Leicester, it felt like an honor I’ll never forget. Being part of that last mile with Kev was a surreal experience. It wasn’t just a moment of physical achievement—it was a symbolic journey that brought us closer to understanding the magnitude of this cause.
But the experience didn’t stop there. I was also given the unique privilege of banging the MND drum during one of the legs of the challenge. While it may sound like a small gesture, it felt like such a powerful way to contribute to the cause. Every beat of the drum was a reminder of the importance of raising awareness, and the collective effort to support those affected by MND. The energy and camaraderie among the team and the supporters along the route were nothing short of inspiring.
A Community United for MND
What struck me the most about that day in Leicester was the sense of community. From Kev and his team to the supporters lining the route, everyone was united in a shared goal: to raise awareness for MND, to support those living with it, and to ensure that Rob’s legacy lives on. It was clear that this was more than just a run or a challenge—it was a movement fueled by love, determination, and a collective will to make a difference.
